Good to see someone with dreams and aspirations rolling up their sleeves. Keep working, don't get discouraged, and you will succeed. I learned computers on my own from a young age and am now living my dream so far as career is concerned. Now if I can just make my millions. :) You might check the thread in my sig for an overview of tuning a Civic.

A lot of the hacking that's done here relates to the ECU (Engine Control Unit) in Honda cars. There are certainly a few applications that run on a PC that we use to tune our cars. In order to write or even understand the applications we use on the PC you'll need to understand what's going on in the ECU to an extent.

Visual Basic is a great first language to learn. Depending upon how much you like hardware, digital electronics, and that sort of thing you might study assembly and/or "C". Those languages will help you figure out what's going on in an ECU more than something like Visual Basic, which isn't used for programming ECUs.

Whatever you decide, work hard and have fun! There is so much to learn about programming and cars you'll probably never figure it all out. If you like learning it's the perfect place for you to be! Don't worry if it doesn't all come in a short period of time - even the most brilliant software people don't know everything about their field. :)

Some links for 'ya:

http://web.archive.org/web/200507280120 ... ry/WebHome - The WIKI everyone keeps talking about. You might check out the 8051 resources and 66k stuff to learn more about the MCU (microcontrollers) used in Honda ECUs. An MCU is like a self contained mini computer, often with RAM, ROM, peripherals, and everything inside one package.

Also, you might check sourceforge and other open source repositories for related projects. I did a search for "Honda" on the sourceforge page and found a few projects. See http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_ ... ords=honda.

Get some caffeine, maybe some hot pockets, and get ready to do a lot of reading, playing, and learning. On second thought, you might want to pass on the hot pockets. :)

Cheers!

You probably can't get source code for some of the projects. Crome isn't open source, for example. There's a good chance many of them won't use VB as well. Keep poking around to see what you can find. There are plenty of other projects out there to check out if you aren't set on just automotive apps. Sourceforge.net and Freshmeat.net are just two places you can check.
