Has anyone worked out details to covert a P2E-A92 auto trans version to a P2E-A12 manual?

Back story is I was recently chasing a no-start issue with my Civic (99 DX manual trans) and that investigation was pointing towards the ECU. Turns out it was not the ECU (this time), but based on the info here on the forum, it appears that I'm probably on borrowed time. I think it would be a good idea to pick up an ECU for the next time.

I've got P2E-A92's easy to find in the yards near me, but the A12 manuals... Not so much.

So as part of my digging into this, I had traced the distributor VR pickups into the ECU. They all (TDC, CYP, CKP) go to HIC120. I assume this is the later version of the HIC1 used in the earlier ECUs. Unfortunately it's a fully potted glob and I have no visibility into what's going on inside.

Has anyone done any digging into the guts of the HIC120?

Also, does this forum website host pics, or is the only choice to host them elsewhere and point to them from here?

Another question... Are the stock timing and fuel maps the same between the auto and manual trans ECU's?

In other words, I'm wondering if even if I DO manage to find out how to make an auto trans ECU work in my manual car, will it change my timing and fuel mapping? This is a DD car, not something I want to be tuning.

Thanks Mike. Appreciate the help. So it sounds like I should just stick with the manual versions and pick up another P2E-A12.

So, next question... I'm assuming the VIN is burned into the ECU and any donor ECU I pick up will need to be modified. (I won't be able to pass my yearly emissions inspection if the VIN is not correct.)

If I've got access to a full featured professional level OBD2 scanner, can I reprogram the VIN myself? Or is this something that only the dealer can do?

Thanks again Mike.

Anyone else? If I pick up a used OBD2b box, can I reprogram the VIN?
