Post subject: PM7 trouble code 11
PostPosted: Wed Sep 07, 2005 2:19 am
I have looked high and low on this site for several hours. Friend told me that the information I seek is here but I have yet to harvest it. So, I decided to post to see what you all know and to possibly get my issue resolved...

I have just completed an engine swap from a d16A6 to a dohc ZC in a '88 CRX Si. I purchased a PM7 ecu. The engine runs fine with the stock PM6 (i.e. no codes or cel). However, when using the PM7, the ecu throws out 11 which is, as the manual states, a bad IMA sensor circuit. After searching a couple other forum sites, the IMA sensor (Idle Mixture Adjustment sensor) was on cars without a cat. Is there a work around for that issue or am I "screwed" and need to get another ecu?

To run PM7 ECU properly you have to relocate 2 wires. I did the same swap and am running PM7 ECU w/o a problem. Then i can just relocate 2 wires and run PM6 ECU. If you'd like to know which 2 wires to relocate, let me know and i'll check out.
IMA sensor replaces O2 sensor.

Thanks

Look. I did an engine swap from a D16A6 (Honda CRX Si '91) to a D16A9 - DOHC ZC. My car runs with lambda sensor and PM6 ECU (i don't know how good, but it runs). But, because of different fuel maps (probably) i have also changed the ECU. PM7 ECU doesn't use lambda sensor, instead of it it uses IMA sensor, if you have any idea what it is and how it looks.

Oh, i found a picture in my directory of both of my ECUs. On the left it's a PM7 and on the right it's a PM6. You can notice IMA sensor on the top of PM7 ECU.
http://www2.arnes.si/~mjereb2/ECU-D16A9&D16A6.jpg

So, this IMA sensor is used instead of lambda sensor.

Now, how to reconnect the main wiring. All modifications are done on main wiring, engine wirings are basically the same.
So, if you look closely to your ECU connectors you can see two black connectors. All pins (i hope this word 'pin' is right) on that two black connectors are numbered, i think from 1 to 36, or i might be wrong. So, on pin numbered 36 it comes one white wire, right? This is lambda sensor, which you won't need when running PM7 ECU. So you can split it (you won't need this white labmda wire for running PM7 ECU, you will only need pin numbered 36 for one other wire) and do something like i did on my last picture in this post, that you would be able to use it when running (if) PM6 ECU. Now look at the pin numbered 20. There comes one brown wire (i have no clue what it is for). This brown wire has to be relocated - connected to pin numbered 36 (were white lambda wire used to be connected). Now you have pin 20 free.
IMA sensor has 3 wires, brown, green and yellow if i'm not mistaken. Now you have to connect IMAs brown wire to the pin20. Remained two IMA wires, green and yellow, you have to solder to a two same colored wires (don't split this two wires, just soled IMAs wires to them) that you will find few inches to the right from the ECU (passenger side). This two wires come from a small blue plug which is unpluged hanging few inches to the right from the ECU.

Look at the picture below just to see how i did the thing. This way i can use both ECU. That disconnected black wire on the picture is a lambda sensor wire, which is not used with PM7 ECU.

As you can see, you need IMA sensor for this ECU swap.

Summary:
-split white wire - pin36, and leave that white wire hanging there
-split brown wire -pin20 and connect it to pin36
-connect IMAs brown wire to pin20
-solder 2 remained IMA wires (green and yellow) to the same colored wires that come from a small blue plug which is unpluged hanging few inches to the right from the ECU.

I hope this will help you a bit.

OK... Umm... Big misunderstanding here. See, I don't have an IMA sensor to tinker around with. And unfortunately as far as I have been able to ascertain, I can't buy one here in the US. I was under the assumption that you were going to tell me how to get the O2 sensor to function in place of the IMA sensor.

I really do appreciate your interest in helping me but this particular solution, I fear, is not going to work for me.

What I need is a work around if possible. One question: how does the PM7 view hole in your picture end up at the top? Mine is opposite my PM6. The cover on yours not mounted properly? Just curious...

Thanks
