How 'exactly' do i send serial commands to a CN2/3 port?

Okay first post, first noob question.

I'd basically like to understand exactly how commands are sent the CN2/3 serial port in order for it to reply with bytes from the mem locations. Is there a standard command list anywhere that can be used? Do i just send the mem location as a series of bits and the ECU knows what to do?

Hopefully somebody can help me! :roll:
