Nope. It is to switch between the ECU's stock map and modified one (the one You're burning on a chip and placing in a socket). You don't have to use a switch actually, but it is quite nice to have an option to switch modified -> stock. If You solder a wire instead of using a switch You will be able to run only Your modified map.

Hey, can this be used on "PM7" ECU's? I have a D16A9 DOHC (ZC - what ever you fancy calling it) and i need to chip it!
Thanks Shane.

Should be fine as long as your ECU looks the same as the one I posted pics of.

Some of the PM7 ECU's came with a 28pin eprom which means that the whole exercise above can be avoided.

Usually labeled as "PM7-X04". But they are actually for o2 sensor equipped engines AFAIK.

It sounds like you've got some electrical issues there . .

Here is the daughterboard I designed to make chipping romless ECU's easier. I've just made a revision to clean it up and make it a little more user friendly.

Using the info from this thread, you should be able to understand how it all fits and works ...

Contact your local PCB manufacturer, I'm sure they'll be able to make some for relatively cheap.

OK, so here is my 2 cents worth, Thanks to all who input in this thread. I have gained some knowledge on the subject and an answer to one of my questions. :)

I just finished socketing my PM6 (like a week ago) and it works great. One thing I did different though. I soldered my 28 pin ZIF directly to the XRAM. It was a tight fit, but it worked well.
Next will be the SST27SF512 upgrade with switches.

A couple pics to share of my project:
