Before last weekend, I thought I was the man when it came to soldering stuff. I've got my handy Weller WTCPT with the 700 degree tip, after all.
Then I tried to clear the solder out of the holes in my P28. Once I got to the ground/power pins, I quickly became frustrated. I had long ago run out of solder wick and Radio Shack was closed. The heat transfers out of those pads really, really fast.
I eventually got them by adding a little bit of solder for thermal mass, getting it hot with the iron throughout, and then using the radio shack POS solder sucker on the other side of the board. Lather, rinse, repeat.
What's the "right" way to get that solder out? (lemme guess: professional soldering station with a vacuum?)
